Raki had no respect for

on the sea beach

Armenian traders floated their wine

downriver to Babylon in casks

made from palm tree wood 


stacked in light boats that they broke up 

and sold too once their cargo moved

taking back to Armenia

only the skins of the boat hull


they built new boats each year


Mercedes Webb-Pullman was Danse Macabre's 2019-2020 Artist-in-Residence who graduated from the International Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand with her MA in Creative Writing. She is the author of The Jean Genie (Hammer & Anvil Books, 2018) and has also appeared in the Danse Macabre anthologies Amour Sombre, Belles-Lettres, Hauptfriedhof, and Weihnachtsmarkt. Her lucky number is 8. Blue. She lives in Ōtaki Beach, New Zealand.
